RSC Fitzgerald St Planter Project

WHAT: To promote key road safety messages, increase road safety in Northam and beautify the Fitzgerald St streetscape.

HOW:
By the installation of decorated planter boxes along Fitzgerald St decorated by local community groups and featuring road safety 'messages that matter' to local people

Project Summary

Installation of 15 wicking beds along Fitzgerald Street Northam decorated with road safety artwork contributed by local community organisations and schools.

The project was generously funded by the Road Safety Commission.

It is being completed in co-operation with the Shire of Northam, local businesses and various community groups.

The Artwork

Under guidance by volunteers from AVAS, 14 community groups completed their own artwork panel which will be fixed to the front of the planter boxes.
This artwork features a safety message that matters to the members of the group in some way. These aren't just safety messages handed down to us from the government - they are things that are important to members of our community - that's a friend, child, daughter, cousin, colleague, team member...

The Planter Boxes

The planter boxes themselves are constructed of concrete-composite and have been converted by the Northam Town Team into wicking beds.

Wicking beds are a water-wise solution to retain water and minimise evaporation, which is better for the plants, the environment and keeps the watering schedule managable for our team of volunteers.

Smart Technology

Smart sensors will be placed in the planter boxes to report on moisture levels in the soil. This information comes back to a dashboard so we can see at a glance how things are going, what plants might eb thirsty, and what boxes need our attention.
